Jess' November Newsletter

Hi All,
I've finally got my blog up and running, sorry about the delay. So, now our communication can be all the better.
There are a few things you should all know about regarding this next quarter. Trillium will begin our state testing soon and I'm supposedly in charge of that. Hopefully, it will be a painless process. A new quarter begins on Monday and you should be receiving progress report within the next two weeks. Now that the building is 90% up and running we'll finally be having our open house. Also we'll be holding conferences right before winter break. However, if you need a longer meeting (more than 30 minutes) to discuss an issue than we can schedule that meeting separately.
In the world of Math we will be diving into and taking over the world of Art. It never saw us coming. My room will slowly be transforming into a more creative project space and will be open to all upper school students working on Art projects during ILP time. So if anyone has large locking cabinets my sanity would greatly appreciate them. This project space might at some point be reclaimed and relocated back down into the art room but until then I'll be enjoying the math art mix. Also if anyone wants to help setup a productive art space I've got a drill and some ideas.
One that note. I hope you all doing well.
Jess

Math and Art

Q2 Syllabus for Math and Art

Jess Brooks
jess@trilliumcharterschool.org

Time: Monday and Wednesday from 12:35pm to 2:05

Objective: Students will use their understanding of mathematical principles to create art. We will cover perspective drawing which will incorporate similar triangles, ratios and scale. Then we will discuss ratio as they relate to historical and current aesthetics. The students will use this information to study the golden ratio, figure drawing and architecture. We will also look at the cultural use of geometric patterns and fractals with the students working to create their own fractal images and self-referencing patterns.

Materials: A three ring binder, compass, protractor, calculator, and graph paper.

$15 materials fee due the first week of class.

Grading: Students grades are determined based off of four main areas each worth 25% of their final grade. They are:
Participation- Determined by class work and attendance.
Homework- Late homework is worth a third less. If a student comes in during ILP to work they will earn back missed points.
Assessment- Art Projects
Portfolio- Which should be a culmination of the quarter and a useful way to keep the students work organized for later reference.

Syllabus IMP 3

Q2 Syllabus for the
Integrated Math Program Year 3

Jess Brooks
jess@trilliumcharterschool.org

Time: Tuesday and Thursday from 12:35pm to 2:05

Objective: Students will continue through Professor E McSquared’s Calculus Primer. Thus far have covered what makes a function, set notation, some basic math language and reviewed some Algebra. We are now moving into a discussion of limits and slope. We will define epsilon and delta in this discussion. Then hopefully cover the First Fundamental Theorem of Calculus.

Materials: A three ring binder, compass, protractor, calculator, and graph paper.

Grading: Students grades are determined based off of four main areas each worth 25% of their final grade. They are:
Participation- Determined by class work and attendance.
Homework- Late homework is worth a third less. If a student comes in during ILP period to work on math they will earn additional homework points.
Assessment- Tests
Portfolio- Which should be a culmination of the quarter and a useful way to keep the students work organized for later reference.

Q2 Syllabus for the
Integrated Math Program Year 2

Time: Tuesday and Thursday from 9am to 10:20 or from 10:25am-11:45

Objective: Students will continue through the IMP material for year two. Once we finish the unit “Solve it” the students will have a clear understanding of factoring, the distributive property and linear modeling. We will then move on to “Is there Really a Difference” where we will study population growths and probability.

Materials: A three ring binder, compass, protractor, calculator, and graph paper.

Homework- Late homework is worth a third less. If a student comes in during ILP period to work on math they will earn additional homework points.
Assessment- Problem of the Week or tests
Portfolio- Which should be a culmination of the quarter and a useful way to keep the students work organized for later reference.
